BrightSword Playtest Instructions

Introducing the BrightSword Playtest Rules!

BrightSword is DGS Games’ fantasy roleplaying game system set in our world of Faelon.

BrightSword is copyright 2010, DGS LLC.

BrightSword is currently undergoing playtest. It is an open playtest, which means you are free to download BrightSword as you will, play it with your group, make comments on the rules on our forum, get updates and be part of the fun. You are not authorized to violate our copyright in any way, plagiarize BrightSword or do anything with it that profits anyone else but DGS LLC.

Here’s what we need…

In the best case, you and your group play in a roleplaying game using the BrightSword rules. Now, as this is a playtest, not all the background material on Faelon is available yet. The basics are available in the Faelon section of our website. As more becomes available, especially maps, you can incorporate that material into your game. Also, any locale, encounter area and non-player character information you generate will be considered, if you like, for official integration into the Faelon world.

If a campaign is not possible, you can make Adventurers at any level of Adventurer Points (AP) and have them battle, either each other or against a team of enemies of your devising. As an example, one useful test that does not take more than a day of gaming is a round robin battle between players each using three adventurers of 500AP each. This can also be done with other limits, such as no more than one adventurer from each path. Each week we will be posting new ideas on how you can playtest the game using a single game session.

What kind of information is useful to us?

Well, just about anything. But it is true that not all playtest comments are created equal. Consider:

“Casters suck.”

“Greatswords are too powerful.”

“The d30 system doesn’t work.”

Not very useful to us…

But this:

“Spell X and Spell Y both produce similar effects, but Spell X costs twice the power.”

“Battleaxes and Greatswords are both two-handed and do d10 damage. But Battleaxes are Brutal and Slow. To get the Brutal ability of the Battleaxe, you have to be worse at parrying due to the slow characteristic, but our group found that you could mitigate that easily by taking the such and so talent [or other means] and so Battleaxe is always the better choice.”

“No one in my group ever hedges anything below a d14. The [math follows] shows that it is never worth it.”

Very useful. Even better when you make suggested fixes.

Playtest results should be posted as a topic under BrightSword>Playtest Results on our forum.

Grammar, spelling, graphic design, and format problems should be reported in the BrightSword>Proofreading board of our forum.

There are also sections of the forum for discussions of all things Faelon. We look forward to your ideas.

Welcome to the team and thanks in advance for all your help!
